Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has expressed his delight at the election of Zohran Mamdani as the new Mayor of New York City, describing the victory as a “fantastic win.” He framed the success as a triumph of hope and unity.
In his statement, Sadiq Khan congratulated the people of New York, asserting that they deserve credit for choosing hope over fear and unity over division.
Shared Narrative of Muslim Mayors:
Khan, a British Pakistani, made history in 2016 when he became the first Muslim Mayor of a major Western capital (London). He successfully secured re-election in 2021 and again in 2024.
Now, Mamdani, an Indian-American Muslim, has been elected as the Mayor of America’s largest city. Khan pointed out the similarity in their experiences, noting that Mamdani, like him, has been a consistent target of severe criticism and attacks by President Donald Trump.
Highlighting the shared values of their respective cities, Khan stated: “Like London, New York is a liberal, multicultural, progressive, and highly successful city. Everything we stand for is the complete opposite of what President Trump represents.” His comments emphasize the progressive ideals of both cities as they stand against divisive rhetoric.
