JERUSALEM: On Saturday, the family of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a Turkish-American woman killed while protesting Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, called for an independent investigation into her death. Eygi, 26, was reportedly shot in the head during a demonstration in Beita on Friday, according to the United Nations rights office.
Her family accused the Israeli military of her “violent” killing, stating, “Her presence in our lives was taken needlessly, unlawfully, and violently by the Israeli military.” They urged President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to ensure a thorough investigation and hold those responsible accountable.
Eygi, a member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), was participating in a weekly protest against Israeli settlements. ISM dismissed allegations that their activists threw rocks at Israeli forces as false, maintaining that the demonstration was peaceful and Eygi was positioned far from any confrontation.
Three Emergency Workers Killed in Israeli Attack in Lebanon
In a related development, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that three emergency workers were killed and two others injured in an Israeli attack on Saturday. The civil defense team was engaged in firefighting efforts in the southern village of Froun following earlier Israeli strikes.
The health ministry condemned the attack as deliberate, stating, “Israeli enemy targeting of a Lebanese civil defense team that was putting out fires sparked by recent Israeli strikes in the village of Froun led to the martyrdom of three emergency responders.” The ministry also noted that two members of the Hezbollah-affiliated Islamic Health Committee were injured when their vehicle was struck near a fire they were attempting to extinguish in south Lebanon’s Qabrikha.
