Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, has revealed that the primary target of the recent deadly suicide attack outside the G-11 Judicial Complex (Kutchery) in Islamabad was the court premises itself, but the attacker was thwarted by strict police security measures.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Islamabad High Court Bar, Minister Naqvi disclosed crucial details from the investigation. He stated that the police checking at the court entrance was “very good,” which prevented a greater tragedy.
“The suicide bomber waited outside for half an hour that day,” Minister Naqvi confirmed. “When the attacker failed to find an opportunity to enter the court complex, he reluctantly targeted the police van parked outside instead.”
The Minister praised the vigilance of the police force for securing the judicial complex. He also took the opportunity to acknowledge the services of Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, recognizing his efforts to advocate for the legal fraternity in all government forums, including Prime Minister’s cabinet meetings.
Minister Naqvi assured the bar association that his ministry would immediately begin processing measures to improve security and other facilities related to the G-11 complex. He concluded on a light note, confirming his affiliation with a specific lawyers’ group (Ahsan Bhoon’s faction).
The Minister’s statement sheds light on the grave threat averted by the police’s high-alert status, confirming that the initial objective of the suicide bomber was to cause devastation within the crowded judicial complex.
