In response to the severe public health threats posed by worsening smog (air pollution), the Lahore District Administration has taken a stringent step by issuing an order to change the operational timings of markets and restaurants across the city. This decision highlights that the air quality challenge has now escalated into a genuine environmental emergency.
A detailed memorandum has been issued by the District Administration to all Assistant Commissioners (ACs) for immediate execution of this decision. To ensure strict compliance and continuous monitoring, the ACs have also been mandated to submit a daily implementation report.
Impact on Urban and Commercial Life
As per the new schedule, all markets in Lahore must close by 10:00 PM, while all restaurants in the city are obligated to cease operations by 11:00 PM. Although these restrictions will inevitably impact commercial activity and late-night routines, the administration maintains that the measure is crucial to protect citizens’ health from the noxious effects of polluted air.
The District Administration has issued a clear warning, stating that adherence to the new timings is mandatory, and strict action will be taken against any violators.
Judiciary’s Firm Intervention
These tough administrative actions follow a series of earlier directives issued by the judiciary. The Lahore High Court had previously imposed a complete ban on all commercial activities on Sundays due to the smog crisis. Furthermore, the court has strictly ordered all wedding halls to conclude their events by 10:00 PM.
The seriousness of the judicial intervention is underscored by the court’s directive requiring a Director-level officer from the Environmental Department to appear personally at every hearing, ensuring continuous accountability for government efforts to mitigate pollution.
