Indian first-class cricketer Akash Kumar Choudhary has etched a phenomenal and unique record in the annals of cricket history, rewriting the record books with an astonishing display of power-hitting. The 26-year-old batsman, representing Meghalaya in a Ranji Trophy group match against Arunachal Pradesh, made history by hitting eight consecutive sixes off eight balls.
Akash Kumar Choudhary’s innings was extraordinary as he simultaneously shattered two major global records:
- Fastest First-Class Fifty: Akash Kumar came in to bat at number eight and completed his half-century in just 9 minutes, facing a mere 11 balls. This feat broke the previous world record for the fastest fifty in first-class cricket, which was held by former English cricketer Wayne White, who scored his fifty off 12 balls in 2012.
- Consecutive Sixes Record: While hitting six sixes in a row is considered a legendary achievement, Akash Kumar took it to an unprecedented level by striking eight consecutive sixes. His entire innings was composed solely of eight sixes, with no fours, marking the first time a batsman has achieved this feat of hitting eight successive sixes in first-class cricket.
While his six-hitting spree put him in an exclusive club, he officially became the third player in first-class history to hit six sixes in an over, joining the ranks of Sir Garfield Sobers (1968) and Ravi Shastri (1985). This record-breaking performance came when the team’s score was already at 576 runs for six wickets.
