HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The longstanding rivalry between the Texas Longhorns and the Texas A&M Aggies is set to reignite with UT’s move to join A&M in the Southeastern Conference.
To mark this revival, both universities are planning an “exciting announcement” at a joint news conference in Houston on August 22 at 11 a.m.
The event will highlight the return of the Lone Star Showdown in the 2024 season across all sports. With both schools’ athletic directors—Trev Alberts of A&M and Chris Del Conte of UT—presiding, this indicates a major development in reestablishing the rivalry.
While the news conference will be held in Houston, the exact location will be disclosed later. The announcement comes just nine days before both teams begin their seasons on August 31. Texas A&M’s Week 0 game against Notre Dame will be broadcast on ABC13 at 6:30 p.m. from College Station’s Kyle Field.
The Texas-A&M football game is scheduled for Saturday, November 30, with the Aggies currently set to host. This will also be the debut of Mike Elko as the Aggies’ head coach.
The 118-game, 130-year-old football rivalry, which has been on hiatus for 13 years since A&M’s departure to the SEC, sees Texas leading the series. The Longhorns won the last match-up on November 24, 2011, before A&M left the Big 12.
