While superheroes are often perceived as indestructible, Scarlett Johansson wishes to remind everyone that some heroes need their definitive goodbye.
In an interview released in InStyle on Tuesday, the “Lost In Translation” star addressed the persistent inquiries surrounding her Marvel Cinematic Universe character, Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, who perished on screen in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
“Natasha is gone. She is gone. She’s gone. Okay?” she stated to the publication.
For those following, her character – a highly skilled assassin – was an essential component of the superhero team, the Avengers, who sacrificed her life to obtain an Infinity Stone, which ultimately defeated the extraterrestrial supervillain Thanos and preserved the universe.
As Marvel establishes the groundwork for the cinematic universe’s subsequent phase – commencing with this summer’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” – speculation has been rampant regarding Natasha’s potential return to the franchise. Johansson swiftly dismisses this speculation.
“They simply refuse to accept it. They’re like, ‘But she could return!'” she conveyed to the publication. “Look, I believe the equilibrium of the entire universe rests in her hand.”
She added, “We must let her go. She rescued the world. Allow her to have her hero moment.”
A revitalized Avengers roster will premiere with 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday,” a film that will signify Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, but not as Iron Man, whom he has portrayed in nine films since 2008. He will be playing the villainous Dr. Doom.
