The European Commission has stated that Meta’s major social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, have violated European Union laws. The accusation centers on their failure to provide users with a simple and accessible way to report illegal content.
In preliminary findings from an investigation released on Friday, the EU’s executive body highlighted that Meta has placed “unnecessary hurdles” in the reporting process for users.
The Commission noted that both platforms appear to utilize “misleading designs,” which can cause confusion and may discourage users from completing a report. According to the findings, both Facebook and Instagram fail to offer an easy-to-use “notice and action” mechanism as required.
In response to these allegations, Meta has denied any wrongdoing or breach of the law.
