England has dismissed women’s cricket head coach Jon Lewis on Friday, following a humiliating 16-0 defeat in the Ashes series in Australia earlier this year.
The decision was made after a comprehensive review by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which also considered the disappointing performance at last year’s T20 World Cup.
Clare Connor, managing director of England Women, expressed appreciation for Lewis’s work since his appointment in November 2022. However, she acknowledged that the outcomes in both the T20 World Cup and the multi-format Ashes series fell short of expectations.
“Under his leadership, the team held off Australia to draw a thrilling 2023 Women’s Ashes, attracting record crowds with an entertaining brand of cricket, while the team’s consistent success in bilateral cricket included a remarkable eight consecutive ODI series wins, for which he should take real credit,” Connor stated.
“While the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes in Australia have been disappointing, there is no doubt about the talent we have available and we will look to appoint a successor shortly.”
Lewis, who previously coached within the England men’s setup, attributed the defeat to “cultural” differences, emphasizing the Australians’ “advantage in terms of athleticism.”
Reflecting on his tenure, the 49-year-old expressed pride in his overall record, which included 52 wins from 73 matches, and the strong box-office performances achieved during his leadership.
“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team, whilst winning and growing the women’s game in this country,” Lewis said.
“I am determined to continue to help drive women’s cricket forward in whatever comes next for me. I wish all the players the best and thank them for letting me be part of their journeys.”
The England women’s cricket team, which has not won a major trophy since the 50-over World Cup in 2017, will play white-ball series against West Indies and India before competing in the 50-over World Cup in India later this year.
Former England captain Charlotte Edwards has emerged as a potential replacement for Lewis.
