Emma Watson’s father has issued a warning to the parents of the new Harry, Hermione, and Ron. As filming commences for the HBO TV series adaptation of Harry Potter, Emma’s dad has addressed the “impact of fame on children.”
Following the official announcement of the new trio this week—with Dominic McLaughlin cast in the titular role, Arabella Stanton set to play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout selected to portray Ron Weasley—Emma’s father has now spoken out about the casting decision. The 35-year-old actress herself famously played Hermione Granger for ten years in the Harry Potter films, and her father recounted his diligent efforts to keep Emma “grounded.”
He told Times Radio, “As a parent, you have to be scared… This can be a very difficult thing for a parent and child to handle, or not.” He continued, “It certainly helped that I don’t actually watch movies, it’s not a big thing in the house, and so it was easier for us to keep her feet on the ground.” The Little Women actress’s father added, “Normal life continued as far as possible: her homework would go back to school on motorbikes, admittedly, but she had to do her homework and check in.”
For those unaware, HBO announced that Harry Potter would be getting a TV series remake, with filming already underway in France. The cast and crew are currently at Île de Sein off the coast of Brittany, recreating one of history’s most iconic moments, where Hagrid famously declares, “You’re a wizard Harry!” The author of the beloved story, J.K. Rowling, has also given her seal of approval regarding the casting of the golden trio, writing on X (formerly Twitter), “All three are wonderful. I couldn’t be happier.”
