The Sindh government has issued a notification officially eliminating all parking fees on public roads throughout Karachi, signifying a major shift in urban parking regulations. As per the notification, no government body under the Sindh government, including the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), is permitted to collect parking charges on roads within the city’s boundaries.
Parking fees can now only be collected in designated areas such as plazas, private plots, or specific parking zones managed by their respective local councils. The notification explicitly states that any individual or organization found charging citizens for parking on public roads will face severe legal repercussions.
This move follows an earlier decision this month to abolish parking fees on 46 roads controlled by the KMC. Announcing the decision in February, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab stated, “This decision has been made in the public interest, as the KMC is now self-sufficient.” He was referring to the improved financial standing of the metropolitan corporation. He added that with financial stability achieved, the corporation no longer needs to collect Rs40-50 million from parking fees, as it possesses over Rs2 billion in its bank account. Wahab had previously asserted that the KMC generated a “record-breaking Rs2.3 billion in revenue” in just seven months, marking a 300% increase in earnings while 751 development projects were underway.
