Egypt’s Council of Senior Scholars has officially prohibited the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for interpreting the Quran, the holy book of Islam. The council made this announcement in response to a question posed by a seeker of knowledge, stating that relying on AI applications, including chatbots, for Quranic interpretation is not permissible from a religious perspective. The council warned that using AI applications could lead to the spread of misinterpretations and misconceptions in society, as they often rely on assumptions, conjectures, and unverified sources of information.
Furthermore, the council emphasized that AI applications often fail to rely on authentic sources of knowledge, leading to the dissemination of misleading and unfounded information. In contrast, the council urged Muslims to seek guidance from reputable interpreters, scholars, and Islamic institutions for a deeper understanding of the Quran.
