The devastating impact of the Punjab floods has reached Sindh, not as floodwaters but as skyrocketing inflation, as disrupted supply chains from Punjab have caused vegetable prices to surge.
According to SAMAA’s reporter Imtiaz Khawer, the supply of tomatoes from Punjab to Hyderabad has been suspended, causing the price to double from Rs100 per kilogram to Rs200. Similarly, onions that were previously available for Rs60 per kilogram are now selling for Rs120. Shopkeepers stated that due to the heavy rains in Punjab, they are procuring vegetables at higher rates.
SAMAA’s reporter Jameel Mughal added that vegetable prices in Sukkur have also risen sharply. Peas that cost Rs400 per kilogram are now selling for Rs600, potatoes have increased from Rs120 to Rs160 per kilogram, and onions have jumped from Rs80 to Rs180 per kilogram. The report further revealed that the price of onions has risen from Rs30 to Rs70 per kilogram, ridge gourd from Rs100 to Rs150 per kilogram, and okra has climbed from Rs150 to Rs200 per kilogram.
