Islamabad — The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) in Pakistan has issued a notification announcing a reduction in electricity prices, providing a degree of economic relief to the public at a time when consumer anxiety over rising utility costs is high.
Reduction Based on Fuel Adjustment:
- The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had initially filed a request with NEPRA to reduce the per-unit price of electricity by 37 paisa.
- After reviewing the CPPA’s application, NEPRA approved and notified a larger reduction of 48 paisa per unit. This decrease has been made on account of the Fuel Price Adjustment (FPA) for September.
Impact on Consumers:
According to the notification issued by NEPRA, this relief will be passed on to consumers in their November electricity bills.
Key Clarifications:
- The reduction will not apply to ‘lifeline consumers’ (those with the lowest power consumption).
- The tariff cut will also be applicable to consumers in Karachi, whose power distribution is managed by K-Electric (KE).
This decision offers a minor reprieve for consumers, though fundamental challenges within the energy sector remain.
