HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Deputies are actively searching for a hit-and-run driver who abandoned a child’s bike after fatally striking the boy in northwest Harris County.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on the Fourth of July along Windy Stone Drive at Concord Green Drive. According to the Harris County sheriff’s deputies, an SUV was traveling north on Concord Green Drive while the young boy was heading west on Windy Stone Drive when the collision happened. The driver reportedly ran a stop sign before hitting the boy on his bike and fled the scene without stopping to help.
The boy was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead. Authorities identified him as 10-year-old Mohammad Hussain Khel.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that after the collision, the bicycle was lodged underneath the SUV and was dragged for nearly a mile. The driver eventually stopped at the intersection of Old Greenhouse and Kieth Harrow, dislodged the bike, and left it on the roadside.
Neighbor Sasha Allen, who left a teddy bear at the growing memorial for Mohammad, expressed disbelief, saying, “That part is unreal. I just hope they find who did it and they get justice.” Another neighbor added, “I don’t know who would do such a thing. I hope their guilt eats them,” as she surveyed the balloons, stuffed animals, and heartfelt messages left in tribute.
Investigators described the suspect’s vehicle as a dark-colored SUV. Capt. Marcus Kinnard-Bing noted, “We are canvassing the area. We do think we may have some video. A lot of people heard things, but we’re still working on the video.”
Courtney Fischer spoke with a neighbor who heard the crash. Malaika Roberts, who described Mohammad as “sweet, well-mannered, and respectful,” said he and some other boys were having fun across the street, setting off fireworks and celebrating the Fourth. She went inside and then heard the loud crash. “And within that split second, this happened,” Roberts recalled. “I thought it was a car wreck. It didn’t dawn on me that it was a little boy.”
Roberts and other neighbors mentioned that drivers frequently run the stop sign at that intersection. “They always run that stop sign, that four-way intersection, always,” Roberts said.
Several neighbors told they had doorbell video capturing the aftermath of the crash, though none appeared to have a clear view of the driver or the vehicle involved. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez has asked neighbors to review their security camera footage and urged anyone with information to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office at 713-221-6000, 713-274-7406, or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
