A man who drove into a street festival crowd in Vancouver, Canada, has been charged with eight counts of second-degree murder. Police reported that Kai-Ji Adam Lo, 30 years old, was operating a black Audi SUV just after 8 p.m. local time when he allegedly drove into a large group of people attending the Lapu Lapu Day Festival, a celebration of Filipino heritage. Tragically, at least 11 individuals, ranging in age from 5 to 65, lost their lives, and many more sustained injuries, some of them critical. Vancouver Police interim chief Steve Rai stated, “The actions of a single person have shattered our shared sense of safety. It is impossible to fully express the extent to which countless lives have been permanently impacted by this individual acting alone.” While a motive has not been disclosed, police have indicated that there is no evidence suggesting the incident was an act of terrorism. Additional charges are anticipated in this case.
