Drew Barrymore identified the most difficult aspect of her divorce from Will Kopelman as navigating single parenthood.
Barrymore, who shares daughters Olive, 12, and Frankie, 10, with her former husband Kopelman, reflected on her experience during a conversation with Moon Zappa about Zappa’s new book, “Earth To Moon.”
“Do you think that we also are so determined to be these capable moms, these accountable, these trustworthy…and did you beat yourself up about every little thing along the way?” Barrymore inquired, to which Zappa, 57, agreed.
Barrymore then elaborated on her own post-divorce challenges.
“Everything to me was very devastating and took me a long time to recover from if it wasn’t in the traditional family dynamic that I swore I would do for my family because I did not grow up that way,” the “Poison Ivy” actress explained.
The host of “The Drew Barrymore Show” admitted to feelings of envy toward children from more conventional family structures.
“It’s weird stuff like that. It’s soup when you’re sick. I remember all the kids at school would go into the office to call their parents when they were sick and I could never get a hold of anybody,” she shared with her guest.
“And I was so jealous of those kids who would call and be like, ‘Mom, Dad, come pick me up.’ I just would sit there and be like, ‘What’s that like.'”
However, Barrymore acknowledged that her unconventional upbringing had its benefits.
“Growing up in your house, there was so much freedom, there was so much autonomy,” she stated.
“That’s a nice reframe,” the “Valley Girl” singer responded, nodding, “Neglect, autonomy…”
