Music icon Dolly Parton has expressed her enthusiasm for Jennifer Aniston’s remake of the 1980s comedy classic 9 to 5, though she does not intend to star in it. Speaking to HuffPost on Wednesday, Parton stated her full support for Aniston’s reimagining of the film, envisioning her contribution primarily through her music.
For those unfamiliar with the original, Dolly Parton famously appeared as Doralee Rhodes in the cult classic, alongside Lily Tomlin as Violet Newstead and Jane Fonda as Judy Bernly.
“Jane, Lily and I have been trying for years to try to come up with a 9 to 5: Two through the years,” Dolly told the outlet, noting, “It never happened.” The 79-year-old musician affirmed, “We have no plans to be in that.” She added, “But I do wish Jennifer the best, because the script I read, I thought, was really good and a new and different take that really brings the office up to date the way that people live now.”
Parton continued, reflecting on the potential for the original cast to reappear, “But I think a lot of it is that, you know, we’re all older now. We’re not gonna look that good on the big screen. All of us up there with all those beautiful, young, fresh people … so I don’t know.”
While Dolly is unlikely to appear on screen, she has offered her vocal talents for the remake, citing her long-standing friendship with Jennifer Aniston. The “Jolene” hitmaker recounted her conversation with Jennifer, saying, “I told her, I said, ‘you’re more than welcome to use my song 9 to 5, and if you need some additional songs, or if you need the 9 to 5 song rewritten or reworked, you know, to do that.'”
Dolly concluded by expressing her desire to be involved musically: “I really would love to see the show, and I’d love to be able to write some music, be involved in that way with it.”
