Novak Djokovic expressed his excitement to defend his US Open title, just three weeks after winning a gold medal at the Paris Games, which further solidified his place as the greatest tennis player in history.
At 37, Djokovic aims to secure a record 25th Grand Slam and become the first player since Roger Federer in 2008 to successfully defend his US Open title. He will begin his tournament campaign against Radu Albot on Monday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“The goal is always to reach the finals and compete for the trophy. My mindset hasn’t changed this year,” Djokovic said at a news conference. “Even with the golden medal, I still feel driven and competitive. I want to make more history and enjoy the tour.”
Although Djokovic has not won any other titles in 2024, having lost to Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open and Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon, he remains motivated by his rivalries with younger players. Djokovic noted that these matchups bring him joy and push him to perfect his game.
Reflecting on his recent form, Djokovic praised the US Open’s famous night sessions and the unique energy of the stadium. He is eager to compete and embrace the challenge of the tournament.
