HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The days following a major storm are always busy for roofers in the Houston area. Carlos Elizondo II, president of Sugar Land Premier Roofing, is feeling the pressure following Hurricane Beryl’s arrival on Monday.
“I’ve probably been going to sleep around 1 a.m. and waking up at 5 a.m.,” Elizondo said.
With nearly a decade of experience in the roofing business and two decades for his father, who co-runs the company, Elizondo emphasizes the importance of using local and trusted contractors.
“Storm chasing is a big thing here,” he explained. “You’re going to have people coming down from all over the nation for a catastrophe like this. Use somebody local and somebody you trust.”
To determine if a roofing company is trustworthy, Elizondo recommends looking them up with the Better Business Bureau and checking references and online reviews. He cautions that references are more reliable since online information can be doctored. Additionally, legitimate companies will use photos and software during roof inspections to accurately assess the damage.
“Not getting it right the first time definitely hurts the second time,” Elizondo noted.
When considering costs, Elizondo advises skepticism if minor roof repairs are quoted at less than $500 and notes that roof replacements should start around $20,000, depending on the home’s size. He also advises not rushing repairs but emphasizes the need for an emergency tarp if the roof is storm-damaged.
“I would rush to get an emergency tarp placed,” he said. “Once that’s on there, you can take your time.”
