The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced on Sunday that over three days of intense monsoon downpours, a minimum of 38 individuals lost their lives and 63 others sustained injuries due to rain-related incidents across the country.
According to the NDMA, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) reported the highest number of casualties, with 19 people dying in various incidents triggered by the heavy rainfall. In Punjab, 12 fatalities were recorded, while Sindh and Balochistan collectively reported seven deaths.
The torrential rains, which impacted several parts of the country from June 26 to 28, have also resulted in damage to infrastructure and disruption in mobility within low-lying and vulnerable regions.
Authorities have cautioned that monsoon activity is expected to persist in several areas today, with intermittent rain anticipated in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the plains of Punjab, and parts of Sindh. The Meteorological Department has also forecasted rainfall in Balochistan.
NDMA’s Warning for Swat and Northern Areas
In a separate development, the NDMA has issued a flash flood warning for Swat and its neighboring districts amidst concerns of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan.
This alert follows increased water levels due to glacial melting, which has the potential to cause sudden flooding in downstream areas.
“Residents in susceptible regions are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols. Coordination with local authorities is crucial to prevent the loss of life and property,” stated an NDMA spokesperson.
Meanwhile, rescue and relief efforts are currently underway in the affected areas, and provincial disaster management authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert.
