A few months ago, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) police initiated a strike with an 11-point charter of demands. These included increases in medical allowance, conveyance allowance, and house rent, as well as the implementation of a career progression system similar to that of the Punjab police. Demands were also made for improved retirement policies, training, housing, and educational facilities for the children of police personnel.
In July, the AJK police observed a “pen-down” strike and later organized a state-wide strike in major districts to demand better rights and facilities. Considering this situation, the deployment of law enforcement personnel in the region has become a matter of concern.
Potential Deployment of Federal Forces
Sources within the interior ministry told Dawn that a few days ago, in a meeting, the heads of five departments and forces, including Islamabad Police, FC, and FIA, were instructed to mobilize forces for deployment in AJK, particularly at key and sensitive installations. They were urged to assemble their personnel promptly and be prepared to respond positively. The department heads requested time to organize the necessary manpower and equipment, and they were given a three-day window to reach AJK once the deployment order is issued.
The sources revealed that 4,000 personnel were requested from the Capital Police and FC. In response, the Capital Police agreed to provide 2,000 officers, while the FC and FIA also committed to arranging manpower. In line with this commitment, the Capital Police are now preparing to deploy 2,000 personnel to AJK.
Islamabad Police Prepare for Deployment
A letter issued on Saturday by the office of the AIG Establishment, addressed to various high-ranking officials, requested the “provision of strength.” It stated that, according to the directions of the IGP Islamabad, the specified police personnel must be sent to AJK temporarily.
These officials were asked to submit lists of suitable police officers and officials on Saturday to ensure the timely departure of the force. The team will include one SSP, four SPs, eight DSPs, 16 Inspectors, 88 Sub-Inspectors/Assistant Sub-Inspectors, 1,718 Head Constables and Constables, 132 Lady Constables, and 33 other staff members.
