In a move set to streamline Bangladesh’s path toward democratic renewal, the country’s interim head, Muhammad Yunus, has announced that a referendum on proposed democratic reforms will be held on the same day as the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for February 2026. This initiative stems from the widespread political changes brought about by the public uprising in July 2024.
Addressing the nation, Muhammad Yunus stated that holding the referendum concurrently with the parliamentary elections will ensure that the goal of reform is not obstructed. Furthermore, he emphasized that combining the votes will make the overall electoral process “better and less expensive.”
The reform plan, known as the “July Charter,” introduces fundamental changes to the country’s governance structure. Key proposals within these democratic reforms include implementing a two-term limit for Prime Ministers and expanding presidential powers.
This dual election event will offer the citizens of Bangladesh a historic opportunity to simultaneously elect their parliamentary leadership and cast their vote on crucial constitutional reforms that will shape the nation’s democratic future.
