A powerful explosion at a chemical factory in Sangareddy, located in India’s southern Telangana state, resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people and left several others injured on Monday. A fire officer reported that the blast reduced significant portions of the building to rubble.
“We have recovered 12 bodies so far,” stated B. Nageshwara Rao, the district fire official at the explosion site. He added, “We are searching through the debris for more bodies.”
Industrial disasters are a frequent occurrence in India, with experts attributing the problem to inadequate planning and the lax enforcement of safety regulations. Indian television footage captured plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky following the blast.
Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed profound sorrow over the incident, stating that “the death of several people has caused great distress.” Vivek Venkataswamy, the state’s labour minister, confirmed that those injured are receiving treatment, including some who had been “stuck under the debris.” Venkataswamy also mentioned that the cause of the explosion is currently under investigation.
