Iyanna Wells, 25, is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting and killing 44-year-old Keeman Bowens in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas this past weekend.
According to the Dallas Police Department, Wells shot Bowens on Sunday, July 21, around 9 p.m. in the 9800 block of Brunton Road, outside the Villa Las Palma Apartments. Officers arrived at the scene to find Bowens lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound. Despite paramedics’ efforts to save him, Bowens was pronounced dead at the scene.
In an arrest affidavit obtained by NBC 5, Wells, who remained at the scene, told police she shot Bowens because he refused to stop following her. Officers seized two handguns from Wells during their investigation.
Witnesses reported seeing Bowens walking behind Wells, and one witness claimed to have heard Bowens speaking to her before she turned and shot him.
During questioning at police headquarters, Wells claimed that as she walked on the sidewalk, Bowens began following her. She said she took out a gun from her backpack and warned Bowens to stop following her. According to Wells, Bowens did not speak to her, did not have a weapon, and did not act aggressively. She said she felt afraid but could not explain why Bowens was following her.
Wells has been arrested and charged with murder. There is no information yet about her bond or whether she has obtained legal representation.
