Fort Worth is proudly celebrating the Como neighborhood’s recent recognition for its outstanding community revitalization efforts, honored by Neighborhoods USA as the best in the nation. Alongside this achievement, city leaders are also acknowledging the upcoming Comofest celebration scheduled for the July 4 holiday.
However, these commendations are tinged with solemn reflections, less than a year after a tragic incident occurred near the event site following Comofest 2023. The mass shooting resulted in three fatalities and eight injuries.
The family of one victim has expressed concerns about the safety of this year’s celebration and believes that changes are necessary.
Despite the shadow cast by the previous year’s tragedy, leaders of the Como neighborhood emphasize its unique character and sense of community.
Comofest, an annual Independence Day celebration initiated in 2021, was established to provide a safer alternative to previous July 3 events marked by violence.
Following the events of Comofest 2023, where gunfire erupted in the vicinity, claiming lives and causing injuries, concerns have been raised regarding safety measures during the festival.
While the daytime events are perceived as family-friendly and secure due to police and security presence, issues arise after dark when crowds spill onto the streets.
Organizers of Comofest refute claims of violence occurring during the event, asserting that security measures are in place. They emphasize the positive impact of Comofest on the community.
Despite these reassurances, concerns persist among some community members, prompting discussions about enhancing security measures for this year’s event.
Fort Worth police have assured that they are collaborating with the community and stakeholders to ensure a safe environment for all attendees. While personnel will be increased, they aim to strike a balance between safety and community engagement.
