The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has initiated legal proceedings against five individuals allegedly involved in an online hate campaign targeting Pakistan’s state institutions during the recent escalation of tensions between Pakistan and India, a spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.
According to the NCCIA spokesperson, the suspects have been named in the first information reports (FIRs) registered under cybercrime legislation. These individuals are accused of disseminating “false and provocative content” on social media platforms during the recent cross-border strain.
The spokesperson stated that the suspects orchestrated a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at the state, specifically targeting the armed forces and senior national officials.
“The identified individuals have been actively involved in promoting misleading propaganda against Pakistan’s state institutions,” the agency representative affirmed.
The FIRs indicate that the suspects consistently shared fabricated and misleading materials, which the NCCIA asserts incited hatred against the military and other key institutions.
“This content contributed to generating unrest, anxiety, and distrust among the public towards the state,” the FIRs noted.
Furthermore, the disseminated materials were designed to instigate fear and confusion among citizens, with prosecutors contending that the campaign aimed at eroding public confidence in the state.
The NCCIA spokesperson confirmed that the investigation agency had commenced legal action against the suspects following the registration of the FIRs.
