Portuguese football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed his decision to decline offers to participate in the Club World Cup. He cited the crucial need for adequate rest and preparation in anticipation of a highly demanding upcoming season.
The 40-year-old, who recently extended his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr for an additional two years, stated that this choice was made to ensure he maintains peak performance for both his club and country.
“I had some offers to play in the World Cup, but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year,” Ronaldo explained in a video shared by Al-Nassr on social media platform X.
Ronaldo’s comments come amidst speculation surrounding his potential involvement in the FIFA Club World Cup, even though Al-Nassr did not qualify. FIFA President Gianni Infantino had previously hinted at ongoing discussions regarding Ronaldo’s possible participation.
However, the Portuguese captain clarified that he chose instead to focus on physical recovery and readiness, emphasizing his commitment to both Al-Nassr and the Portuguese national team.
“I want to be ready not only for Al-Nassr but also for the national team. So, this is why I decided to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to anything,” he added. “And of course, to be in this club, which I love.”
Earlier this month, Ronaldo scored in the Nations League final against Spain, a match that concluded 2-2 before Portugal emerged victorious on penalties to secure the trophy.
Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in 2022 after his departure from Manchester United. Since then, he has become a pivotal player for the Riyadh-based club, having netted 93 goals in 105 appearances across all competitions.
“My goal is always to win something important for Al-Nassr. And of course, I still believe in that,” he stated. “This is why I renewed the two years more because I believe that I will be a champion in Saudi Arabia.”
With his career goal tally now standing at 932 goals—comprising 794 at club level and 138 for Portugal—Ronaldo has set his sights on achieving the remarkable milestone of 1,000 goals, a target he continues to approach with each match.
