NEW DELHI: The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a global organization dedicated to press freedom, has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating state of journalistic liberties in India. The organization conveyed its criticism through a formal letter addressed to the Indian Prime Minister, demanding the immediate release of detained journalists.
In the letter, CPJ unequivocally stated that the continuous and arbitrary application of anti-terrorism laws against working journalists directly contradicts Prime Minister Modi’s public assertions regarding India’s status as a robust democracy.
The global organization warned that the prolonged detention of journalists and the suppression of critical voices have significantly damaged India’s international standing and reputation for upholding democratic values. CPJ urgently demanded that India release all journalists currently held without delay.
The organization further called upon the Indian government to guarantee a safe and free working environment, allowing the press to perform its essential professional duties without fear of state reprisal or legal harassment.
