Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir denied receiving any letter from former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan on Thursday.
Speaking informally to the media, the army chief, apparently referring to Khan’s ‘open letters,’ stated that he would not read it even if he received it.
General Munir further clarified that if he were to receive any such letter, he would forward it to the prime minister.
He reiterated that Pakistan is progressing satisfactorily and remains on the path of development.
This development comes a day after Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023 on multiple charges including corruption and terrorism, wrote a third open letter to Gen Munir, as per his lawyer.
In the third letter, the jailed PTI founder repeated allegations of election rigging, claiming that “money launderers” were brought into power through manipulated polls.
Earlier, the 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician had penned two “open letters” on February 3 and February 8, arguing that all democratic avenues had been blocked.
In his previous letters, Imran Khan highlighted six points, urging the military to reassess its policies to restore public confidence.
The letters gained significance as PTI had recently ended negotiations with the government after demanding two key conditions:
- Formation of judicial commissions on the events of May 9, 2023, and November 24-27
- Release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan
Government’s Response
PM’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah criticized Imran Khan’s letters, alleging that they aimed to create divisions between the army and the public.
He questioned how these letters were being sent from jail and advised Khan to pursue his political struggle within parliament.
Similarly, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui described Khan’s letter to Gen Munir as evidence of his “desperation and frustration.”
