In Richardson’s Duck Creek neighborhood, residents are concerned about two intersections off Yale Road.
“Very, very busy street, very busy intersection,” said Paul Brown, a resident of the neighborhood for about eight years.
Brown and his neighbors reported frequent speeding and accidents at the intersections of Arapaho Road and Beltline off Yale Road.
“It’s very common to have pretty major accidents at that intersection,” Brown said, noting that his own family had been involved in an accident there, not their fault.
Concerns over road safety increased this year following Richardson ISD’s “Project RightSize,” which involved closing and consolidating schools due to declining enrollment.
“There were a lot of high tensions around this conversation in our neighborhood. There’s probably no perfect answer, but I understand people’s frustration,” Brown added.
To address safety concerns, the school district updated roads to ensure students could safely walk or bike to their new schools. The City of Richardson installed school zone signs and painted crosswalks over the summer.
“It’s certainly better than not having it there. I can’t say what the exact impact of that will be,” Brown commented.
A city spokesperson informed NBC 5 that all additions will be tested, with the new signs and crosswalks expected to be completed by August 5.
The Richardson Police Department will hire crossing guards for the two intersections off Yale Road, according to the school district. The first day of school for Richardson ISD is Tuesday, August 13.
