LONDON: CIA Director Bill Burns and MI6 Chief Richard Moore issued a stark warning on Saturday about the current global order, describing it as “under threat in a way we haven’t seen since the Cold War.” In a joint op-ed for the Financial Times, the two intelligence leaders underscored the crucial role of their partnership in addressing unprecedented threats from Russia, China, and the Middle East.
The article, marking the first-ever joint publication by the heads of the CIA and MI6, highlights the enduring significance of their alliance, which celebrated 75 years of collaboration two years ago. Burns and Moore reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing Russian invasion that began in February 2022. They emphasized the importance of continuing support for Ukrainian intelligence and resisting Russian aggression.
The op-ed also addressed Russia’s attempts at sabotage and disinformation across Europe, as well as the challenges posed by China, which they described as the “principal intelligence and geopolitical challenge of the 21st Century.” The intelligence chiefs noted their agencies’ adaptation to these challenges, including the use of advanced AI and cloud technologies.
The joint statement comes ahead of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Washington on September 13, where he will meet with US President Joe Biden. Discussions are expected to focus on continued support for Ukraine and efforts to secure a truce in Gaza, amid diverging positions on Israel. The UK has recently suspended 30 arms export licenses to Israel due to concerns about potential violations of international law.
