Chrissy Teigen is opening up about the challenges her family has faced since her eldest son, Miles, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
The model, who shares children Luna (9), Miles (6), Esti (2), and Wren (22 months) with singer John Legend, spoke to PEOPLE about the difficulties surrounding his condition.
“It really hit Miles harder than a lot of the other kids,” she recalled with emotion. “His pain was incredible, and he’s usually such a tough little guy.”
“We were just thrown headfirst into this whole new world of chaos and suddenly had to learn so much, all at once,” Teigen explained.
“Everything just stopped. We found ourselves constantly in and out of hospitals, sitting down with notebooks, scribbling down tons of information, and even filming every step someone took with the insulin,” she shared.
Chrissy then recounted a poignant question from her son: “‘Why me? How come not Luna?'” she remembered. “He was really worried about how it would affect his ability to play sports. He kept asking, ‘Can I still have candy? Can I still have ice cream?’ All those things that are so important to a kid.”
Becoming emotional, she continued, “You try absolutely everything – reward charts, little bribes, extra iPad time – just trying to find anything that will make him feel a little more comfortable. The first three months were incredibly tough for our whole family because your child is in pain, and there’s not much you can do about it,” the model reflected.
