LAHORE, Pakistan—The globally renowned Qawwal and vocalist Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is celebrating his 51st birthday today. Born on December 9, 1974, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan stands as one of the most prominent figures carrying the legacy of Qawwali and Sufi music onto the international stage.
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan began his musical tutelage at the tender age of three under his legendary uncle, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Continuing this powerful tradition, he has rendered countless timeless songs for dozens of films and dramas in both Pakistan and India. His soulful voice has been featured on major Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Akshay Kumar, and he has successfully won hearts by singing in the Bengali language as well.
National Service and Global Recognition
Beyond film music, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s contribution to national songs and anthems is also significant, with his performances often serving as symbols of national unity and patriotism.
In recognition of his extraordinary services to the arts, the Government of Pakistan honored him with the Pride of Performance award. Furthermore, he has been the recipient of numerous national and international accolades, including Filmfare and IIFA Awards. His academic contributions were also acknowledged in 2019 when Oxford Sufiana University bestowed upon him an honorary PhD degree in music.
