CANTON, Ohio (KTRK) — The Houston Texans’ stars didn’t take the field for the NFL’s first game since the Super Bowl 172 days ago, but the Hall of Fame Game still highlighted the competition to come in the preseason for the AFC South champions.
broadcasted NFL on ESPN’s coverage of Houston’s preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. While key players like C.J. Stroud and Stefon Diggs sat out, the Texans showcased their roster. The game was cut short with three minutes left in the third quarter due to storms, resulting in a 21-17 loss for Houston.
Quarterbacks Davis Mills and Case Keenum each threw touchdown passes, and Xavier Hutchinson impressed with five catches for 56 yards, making a strong case for his inclusion in the Texans’ top wide receiver lineup. Much of the game discussion centered around the new kickoff rules, which led to a few penalties for players leaving early.
What’s next for the Texans?
Aside from preparing for their next game, the Texans are celebrating a major milestone. Andre Johnson, a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro wide receiver, is set to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony, which also honors Bears legends Devin Hester, Steve McMichael, and Julius Peppers; Colts great Dwight Freeney; 49ers star Patrick Willis; and Randy Gradishar, begins at noon CT on ESPN and NFL Network. Johnson, a University of Miami alum, will be the first player drafted by the Texans to receive this honor.
The Texans will stay in Ohio after the Hall of Fame Game to continue preparations for their next preseason match against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, Aug. 9, which will be aired on ABC13 at 6 p.m. CT. They will practice in Huntington Valley, Ohio, from Aug. 5-7.
Upcoming games include hosting the New York Giants on Aug. 17 and the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 24, both starting at noon CT on.
