Tina Lewis, a Canadian woman, was enjoying a rewarding extended stay in India when she was detained and nearly sent to jail after a GPS device was found in her luggage at Dabolim International Airport in Goa on December 5.
The 51-year-old telemedicine nurse practitioner and ultra-marathon runner had been traveling through nearly a dozen airports during her journey. She was about to board a flight to Kerala when authorities questioned the Garmin inReach Mini GPS device she had in her bags.
Although she avoided jail time, the ordeal led to her spending six days in court and incurring thousands of dollars in expenses. She described the experience as being treated like a fugitive.
