Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that he personally apologized to US President Donald Trump over an “anti-tariff advertisement,” confirming that the US leader was “angry” about it.
This admission comes amid strained trade relations between the two neighbors. According to a foreign news agency, President Trump had previously cut off all trade negotiations with Canada following the release of the advertisement.
In a statement, Prime Minister Carney said, “Trade negotiations will resume when the US is ready.” He acknowledged that the United States is fundamentally “changing all its trade relationships” and that this is a reality Canada cannot control. However, he maintained that Canada still has “excellent trade” with the US.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific summit, Carney also touched upon his other diplomatic engagements. He mentioned that Canada would deepen security and defense cooperation with South Korea and described his talks with the Chinese president as “constructive overall.”
According to the Canadian Prime Minister’s office, Carney also met with the Prime Minister of Japan during the summit, where the two leaders discussed expanding economic ties.
