Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has stated that there are no plans to reach a free trade deal with China. In a statement, Carney said that the recent agreement with China is limited to reducing tariffs in a few sectors only. He added that Canada has no intention of negotiating a free trade deal with China or any non-market economy.
This statement comes after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 100% tariff on Canadian goods if a trade deal is made with China. Carney’s statement has been made in response to Trump’s warning, where he said that if Canadian Prime Minister Carney understands that they are allowing China to use Canada as a “drop port” for shipping goods to the US, they are “suffering from a severe misunderstanding.”
Trump also claimed that if China were to take full control of Canada, it would destroy Canada’s businesses, social structures, and way of life.
