The United Kingdom is set to introduce new drone regulations starting January 1. According to media reports, the new rules will require individuals flying drones or model aircraft weighing over 100 grams in open skies to pass an online theory test. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) will issue a flyer ID (FID) to those who pass the test, allowing them to operate drones.
Prior to this, a theory test was required for individuals flying drones or model aircraft weighing over 250 grams. The regulators believe that the new rules will affect five million people. Jonathan Nicholson, the spokesperson for the Civil Aviation Authority, stated that it is common for people to receive drones as gifts during Christmas, but it is essential to follow the law. Those with cameras on drones weighing over 100 grams will need to obtain a FID and register with the CAA.
Additionally, parents or guardians will be required to be present during the online theory test for children under 13. Children under 12 will require supervision from an adult aged 16 or older, and their parents will also need to obtain a FID. Operating a drone without a FID will be illegal, punishable by fines and, in some cases, imprisonment.
As part of the free theory test, individuals will be educated on drone flight locations and the privacy concerns surrounding camera-equipped drones.
