Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been booked in a police station in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on charges of allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments and disrespecting the cultural traditions of the coastal region of Karnataka. The complaint was filed by Shashank Mathew, a lawyer from Bengaluru, who alleged that Ranveer Singh had insulted the tradition of Chaudandi Devar by mimicking a scene from the film Dohra in the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India in Goa.
According to the complaint, Ranveer Singh had not only insulted the tradition but also referred to Chaudandi Devar as a terrifying woman. The complaint further alleged that the character of Chaudandi Devar is revered in the coastal regions of Karnataka as a sacred deity and that depicting it in such a manner is equivalent to hurting religious sentiments and spreading social hatred.
The case is currently being heard in the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, and the next hearing is scheduled for April 8. This is not the first time that Ranveer Singh has been accused of hurting religious sentiments, as a similar complaint was filed last month, following which he had issued an apology on social media.
