Mumbai: The renowned playback singer and actress of Bollywood, Sulakshana Pandit, has passed away at the age of 71 due to cardiac arrest. Her demise has sent a wave of grief across the entertainment industry and among her fans. Her brother and music composer, Lalit Pandit, confirmed the news of her death.
According to Indian media reports, the legendary artist from a bygone era gained significant fame through her films like ‘Uljhan’ and ‘Chehre Pe Chehra.’ Her brother, Lalit Pandit, stated that Sulakshana Pandit complained of breathing difficulties on Thursday evening. She passed away en route to Nanavati Hospital where she was being taken for medical treatment.
Sulakshana Pandit began her cinematic journey in 1975 with the film ‘Uljhan’ opposite Sanjeev Kumar. Subsequently, she worked alongside almost all the leading actors of her time, including Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna. Her other major films include Sankoch, Hera Pheri, Khandaan, Dharam Kaanta, and Gora. She also acted in a Bengali film, ‘Bandhi,’ in 1978.
Parallel to her acting career, Sulakshana Pandit had an impressive career as a playback singer. She recorded songs in several languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Oriya, and Gujarati. Many of her popular songs are still cherished for her melodious voice.
Sulakshana Pandit belonged to a distinguished musical family from Hisar district, Haryana, and was the niece of the classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj. She began singing at the tender age of nine and started her musical career alongside her brother, Mandheer. Her siblings include Jatin Pandit, Lalit Pandit, and former actress Vijeta Pandit.
