Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani has sparked a major debate after a candid confession regarding widespread corruption and institutional failure within the workers’ welfare housing schemes. He revealed that despite billions of rupees being expended over the last 50 years under the Workers’ Welfare Board, the agency managed to construct a mere 10,000 flats for the working class.
Speaking at an event in Karachi, the Provincial Minister admitted that the rampant corruption was pervasive, affecting every phase of the projects—including the purchase of land, construction, allotment, and even the subsequent repair of the flats.
Expressing deep frustration with the system, Saeed Ghani acknowledged the housing sector’s failure and even suggested a radical reform: “I went so far as to suggest removing the housing sector from the Workers’ Welfare Board entirely.” He argued that if those billions had been strategically spent on education and health initiatives, the standard of living for millions of laborers would have been significantly improved today.
Reaffirming his commitment, the Minister stated that he still considers himself a trade union worker. His primary goal is to integrate all private sector employees into the Social Security Net to ensure their children receive free education and their parents benefit from complimentary medical treatment.
