Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, witnessed another tragic incident as student leader Osman Hadi succumbed to his injuries in Singapore while receiving treatment. According to Bangladesh’s media, the spokesperson of the revolutionary movement, Shafiq Osman Hadi, who was severely injured in a shooting incident in Dhaka last Saturday, passed away while undergoing treatment in Singapore’s General Hospital. The confirmation of his death was made by the revolutionary movement through a Facebook post on Thursday night, while the news was also shared on his verified Facebook account.
Shafiq Osman Hadi, the convenor of the Dhaka University unit of the revolutionary movement, told the Dhaka Tribune that Osman Hadi passed away at 9:45 pm Bangladesh time on Thursday night. A fire broke out at the cargo terminal of the Dhaka Airport, following which all flights were suspended. The leader of the Health Cell of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Hadi’s doctor, Dr. Ahad, also confirmed his death in a video message.
According to the report, Shafiq Osman Hadi was shot in the head by a motorcyclist who fired at him from behind while he was traveling in a battery rickshaw for an election campaign on December 12. The investigative agencies stated that the motorcyclist had fired several shots at Hadi, who was then immediately taken to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where an emergency neurosurgery was performed due to a severe head injury caused by the bullet entering his left ear and exiting from the right side of his head, causing severe brainstem damage.
After the surgery, Hadi was shifted to Aviary Care Hospital and later taken to Singapore for further treatment on December 15. The death of Osman Hadi has sparked outrage and condemnation from the opposition parties, including the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) and the National Citizen Party (NCP). The NCP issued a condolence statement, praying for the deceased’s forgiveness and asking for patience for his family.
On the other hand, the law enforcement agencies have identified the main perpetrator, Faisal Karim Misbah, who was involved in the shooting, while his accomplice, Alamgir Sheikh, is being investigated for riding the motorbike. According to investigative sources, both the accused have crossed the border illegally and are hiding in India.
The protests against the Indian High Commission in Dhaka continued for a second day, with students and student leaders distributing sweets and celebrating the victory of the movement. So far, the police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) have arrested 14 people in connection with the case, including the parents, wife, brother, relatives, and alleged human traffickers of the accused. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
On the other hand, protests against the Indian government continued in Bangladesh for a second day. The protesters demanded that India apologize for calling the student movement “radical.” The student leaders have given the Indian government 72 hours to retract its statement.
