A top political opponent of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was granted bail on Friday after months behind bars on accusations his party took kickbacks in exchange for liquor licences. Arvind Kejriwal, chief minister of the capital Delhi and a key leader in an opposition alliance that battled Modi in national elections earlier this year, was first detained in March over the long-running corruption probe. He is among several opposition leaders, with one of his colleagues describing his arrest at the time as a “political conspiracy” orchestrated by Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that Kejriwal’s…

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign set a new fundraising milestone, pulling in $47 million within 24 hours of her highly anticipated debate against former President Donald Trump on Tuesday night. This remarkable sum, shared by the campaign with The New York Times, highlights the growing momentum behind Harris as she continues her bid for the White House and significantly widens the financial gap between her and Trump’s campaigns. The $47 million haul is the largest 24-hour fundraising surge for Harris since her campaign launch in July when she brought in $81 million on the first day of her candidacy. This latest…
NEW ORLEANS: Storm Francine barreled across southern US on Thursday, pounding the region with heavy rains and gusty winds while causing widespread power outages for hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. It had weakened from a Category 2 hurricane to a tropical depression as it moved northeastward over central Mississippi, but still packed winds of 35 miles per hour (55 km per hour) and threatened areas with dangerous storm surges early on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory. It was expected to weaken further and become a post-tropical cyclone later in the day, the center added.…
SYDNEY: Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X, on Friday labelled Australia’s centre-left government as “fascists” in response to proposed legislation that would impose fines on social media companies for failing to prevent the spread of online misinformation. The US State Department on Thursday imposed sanctions on a Chinese research institute and several companies it said have been involved in supplying Pakistan’s ballistic missile programme. Washington similarly targeted three China-based companies with sanctions in October 2023 for supplying missile-applicable items to Pakistan. Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement that the Beijing Research Institute of Automation for Machine Building Industry had worked with Pakistan to procure equipment for testing rocket motors for the Shaheen-3 and Ababeel systems and potentially for larger systems. The sanctions also targeted China-based firms Hubei Huachangda Intelligent Equipment Co, Universal Enterprise, and Xi’an…

As tropical storm Bebinca gains strength off northern Taiwan, meteorologists in Taipei are using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to more accurately predict the storm’s path. This AI-based forecasting represents a significant leap forward for Taiwan, offering improved precision in tracking typhoons compared to traditional methods. Earlier this year, AI tools, including Nvidia’s FourCastNet, Google’s GraphCast, and Huawei’s Pangu-Weather, were used to forecast Typhoon Gaemi—the strongest typhoon to hit Taiwan in eight years The AI models accurately predicted Gaemi’s trajectory as early as eight days before landfall, outperforming conventional forecasting systems, which typically provide less advanced notice. “People are starting…
A potentially hazardous asteroid the size of a skyscraper is set to zip past Earth on September 17, according to NASA. In a report published by Live Science, the skyscraper-size asteroid named 2024 ON has an estimated diameter between 721 and 1,575 feet (220 to 480 meters) and will zip past the Earth at 19,842 mph (31933 km/h) — or around 26 times the speed of sound. Asteroid 2024 ON will come within 0.62 million miles (1 million kilometers) of Earth, about 2.6 times the distance to the moon. While a close pass by cosmic standards, it poses little to…
