Collin County continues to see residents testing positive for the coronavirus and experiencing serious effects from COVID-19 while McKinney has ceased tracking cases of the virus. Because of “fluctuations” in the numbers of active cases, McKinney spokeswoman Denise Lessard said the decision was made to take the dashboard offline and to direct residents to the statewide database, which includes Collin County numbers. Plano’s Parks and Recreation department cited a project to preserve the city’s oldest tree as one of the department’s top highlights of 2021. The quadricentennial (400 years) bur oak tree in Bob Woodruff Park South, 3840 E. Park Blvd., is documented as the oldest living tree found in Plano, according to the Texas Historic Tree Coalition. In September, the tree received special treatment after a 50-inch crack was discovered in its trunk, the department wrote in a Facebook post. The initial phase of the Texas secretary of state’s 2020 election audit in four of the state’s largest counties turned up a relatively small number of ballots for investigation, according to a new report released Friday. Out of the 11.3 million votes cast statewide, Secretary of State John Scott found a potential 509 instances where individuals may have cast ballots in Texas and another state and 67 possible cases of votes cast in the name of deceased people. Two people were killed and three were injured in a crash Thursday evening in Pleasant Grove, police said. Dallas police were called about 6:20 p.m. to reports of a major accident involving multiple vehicles at the intersection of Lake June Road and Masters Drive. Police did not say how many cars were involved. Two people, who were not identified by police, were killed and three people were taken to hospitals in unknown conditions. More than 30 stolen vehicles were found at a chop shop in southeast Oak Cliff on Friday, Dallas police said. The 32 disassembled vehicles were found after a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter tracked another stolen vehicle to a property near the 800 block of J.J. Lemmon Road, on the border of Dallas and Hutchins. The Dallas police Auto Theft Task Force searched the 120-acre property and recovered the vehicles. Chop shops are illegal operations that strip parts from stolen vehicles and sell them. Police said an investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made. No additional information…
Dallas County is ending the year on a grim milestone: More than 2,600 new COVID-19 infections were reported on New Year’s Eve, as people ring in 2022 and cases of the highly contagious omicron variant soar nationwide. The county reported 17 new coronavirus deaths and 2,614 new cases Friday. Of the new cases, 1,902 were confirmed and 712 were probable.
