Parkland Health & Hospital System has filled its additional COVID-19 wards less than a week after they were opened as the highly contagious omicron variant continues to spread through North Texas. The area’s largest public hospital system had about 170 COVID-19 patients Monday, another “high watermark” for the latest omicron-fueled wave, said Dr. Joseph Chang, Parkland’s chief medical officer. That’s a 60-patient increase from 110 COVID-19 patients last Monday. While Parkland evaluates other options to accommodate the patient increase, opening more rooms is becoming increasingly difficult as the hospital deals with other diseases during the winter, Chang said. Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty Monday of criminal fraud after she built her blood-testing startup Theranos Inc. into a $9 billion company only to see it collapse in scandal. A jury in San Jose, California, returned the verdict after hearing three months of testimony that was often technical, heavily contested and, from Holmes herself, shocking. Unless the decision is overturned on appeal, the 37-year-old new mother faces as long as 20 years in prison, though she’s likely to be sentenced to far less than that. Holmes, wearing a mask in the courtroom as everyone else did, stayed perfectly still and…
Texas abortion providers are again asking the Supreme Court to make the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals send their challenge to Senate Bill 8, which prohibits abortions after approximately six weeks in the state, to a state district court for prompt action. The Texas abortion providers were set to have their case heard in the 5th Circuit on Friday, but the challengers petitioned the high court on Monday to bring their case back to the state district level. “We filed this request today because the case should be sent back to the district court immediately so that the case can proceed against…

Richard Acosta Jr., 33, was arrested last week. Police said he drove his son, Abel Elias Acosta, to and from the Texaco station in the 700 block of West Walnut Street, near downtown Garland, where four teens were shot, three fatally on Dec. 26. The father’s attorney, Heath Harris, said he believes…

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who was outspoken about an unfounded claim of African Americans being the “biggest group” of unvaccinated people driving a COVID-19 surge in mid-2021, tested positive for the virus in the midst of a resurgence driven by the highly-contagious omicron variant. The second-highest political seat-holder in the state experienced mild symptoms before testing positive last week, Patrick’s campaign said in a statement released Monday. “He has subsequently tested negative and is completing his quarantine period,” the statement added. Editor’s note: The video above is from an August 2021 report on Lt. Gov. Patrick’s comments…
