Dallas County reported 77 more COVID-19 deaths and 11,879 new coronavirus cases in the past week, as the incredibly transmissible omicron variant has sent the number of new cases soaring across Texas. An equivalent of the biblical “so great a cloud of witnesses” took over my brain as I rummaged through memories of scores of Dallas-Fort Worth-area Black pioneer journalists whose names are foreign to generations of newcomers. Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center are studying a polyclonal antibody therapy to treat nonhospitalized people with early COVID-19 as part of a national effort to keep patients with the virus out of the hospital.
