ROME: Italian police has caught a top mafia fugitive who had been on the run for nearly 20 years thanks to the help of the Google Maps app, an investigator told Reuters on Wednesday. But the long-format tournament and February’s Twenty20 women’s league were both called off until further notice on Tuesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said. “BCCI does not want to compromise the safety of the players, support staff, match officials and other participants involved,” its statement read. SYDNEY: With so much focus on getting the medical exemption he needed to fly into Melbourne to defend his Australian Open title, it seems Novak Djokovic may not have paid enough to attention to his visa. The medical exemption allowed the top-ranked Djokovic entry to the tournament regardless of his vaccination status for Covid-19, a subject he has declined to clarify amid months of speculation he could miss the season-opening major unless he can prove he’s had two doses of a coronavirus vaccine. But it wasn’t everything he needed to enter Australia, which has strict border regulations in place for…
SYDNEY: The fourth Ashes Test sprung to life late on the opening day after sweeping showers threatened to dampen the prospects of both teams for a positive start at the Sydney Cricket Ground. After rain delays permitted only 21 completed overs in the opening two sessions Wednesday, runs and wickets came more frequently in the final passage of play as Australia reached 126-3 at stumps. England’s bowlers struck twice in the final session to give the tourists a small spring in their step heading into day two. James Anderson finally winkled out Marcus Harris for a 109-ball 38 and Mark…
LONDON: England director Ashley Giles said he felt the responsibility for their Ashes series loss in Australia but warned that getting rid of the current leadership without bringing in systemic change was not the answer to their problems in red-ball cricket. England have lost the first three matches in the Ashes series and are playing only for pride in the remaining two Tests in Sydney and Hobart. It has been an abysmal 12 months in Test cricket for England, who lost four series in a year for the first time. “Being here now in this position, I absolutely feel the…

Usman Khawaja scored a memorable century on his return to Test cricket to strengthen Australia’s position in the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney after a double-wicket breakthrough by Stuart Broad on Thursday. The Pakistan-born Khawaja, playing his first Test since the 2019 Ashes series in England in place of Covid-isolated Travis Head, was at his unflappable best in notching an unbeaten hundred to put Australia in charge at 321 for six at tea. Khawaja went to the break unconquered on 102 off 202 balls with skipper Pat Cummins on 15. The elegant 35-year-old left-hander looked likely to be going to…
Tennis world number one Novak Djokovic fought against deportation from Australia on Thursday after the government revoked his visa for failing to meet Covid vaccine-entry requirements. The vaccine-sceptic Serb was stopped by border officials on arrival to Australia late on Wednesday and denied entry into the country. He is currently being held at an immigration detention facility in Melbourne and faces deportation. Djokovic had flown into the city’s Tullamarine Airport expecting to defend his Australian Open crown, and to bid for an unprecedented 21st Grand Slam title. He had claimed on Instagram that he had obtained an exemption to play…
KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) now requires exporters to bring proceeds back to the country within 120 days instead of 180 days — a decision exporters believe is unworkable. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the SBP said it has amended foreign exchange regulations under which exporters would be required to bring proceeds back to the country within a maximum of 120 days from the date of shipment. Earlier, the exporters were required to bring their proceeds within 180 days. “The new measure is expected to positively impact foreign exchange inflows in the market,” the SBP said, adding…
