A vacant apartment building was destroyed and several homes were damaged during a fire early Saturday in northwest Dallas. The fire was reported about 1:45 a.m. in the 3400 block of Hidalgo Drive, off Webb Chapel Road. Responding firefighters saw “heavy fire” coming from the vacant building, Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said. It took more than 70 firefighters to bring the apartment fire under control, but the building collapsed. Staffing shortages caused by COVID-19 has prompted Richardson ISD to ask for volunteers to work in schools. Parents and community members are being recruited to fill in to help keep schools open, according to an announcement by the district. “RISD is facing immediate and critical shortages in support positions throughout the district,” Richardson ISD’s website states.
