HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston police are looking for a thief whose legs were caught on surveillance video dangling out of a busted car window during a burglary spree targeting elementary school teachers in East End. On Jan. 20, the man broke into 17 cars in the employee parking lot on Canal Street across Franklin Elementary School, police said. A woman called police at about 6:30 a.m. reporting her son went missing after she said he went looking for guns and threatened to kill himself. HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The parents of Nicholas Croom said their son was heading home from work Thursday night to see his brother, who is in town visiting family, when Croom was shot and killed in what authorities said may have stemmed from road rage. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a shooting Thursday at about 6:45 p.m. in the 8700 block of Sam Houston Parkway East. In very young children, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus causes less severe disease than the Delta variant, according to a new study. Researchers reviewed data on nearly 80,000 U.S. children under age 5 with a first infection, including 7,201 infected in late December or early January when Omicron was causing more than 90% of cases. New findings add to evidence that people with a certain version of a gene are less likely to develop severe COVID-19. Earlier research had identified a specific group of genes, called the OAS1/2/3 gene cluster, as being involved in the risk for severe COVID-19. One version of a gene in that cluster – passed down from Neanderthals – appeared to protect against severe disease, reducing the risk by about 23%.
